About Muskegon Brewing Company

Established in December 1876 in Muskegon, Michigan, the Muskegon Brewing Company has a rich legacy deeply intertwined with the history of the region. Founded by three German immigrants – Otto and Gustav Meekse and Gottlieb Ninnemann – the brewery aimed to deliver quality beer while prioritizing consumer safety.

The origins of the brewery trace back to 1867 when Frederick Neumeister constructed the original brewery. The founders emphasized the purity of their products, labeling them as “pure and without drugs or poisons,” ensuring customers of their commitment to quality.
In 1882, the brewery made strides in innovation by installing an electric generator powered by a steam engine, pioneering one of the country’s first electrical lighting systems for a brewery floor. Two years later, in 1884, Muskegon Brewing Company merged with the S.C. Chumard Bottling Works, expanding its operations.

Expanding beyond brewing, the company ventured into agriculture in 1890, acquiring land for a dairy farm. By 1922, they diversified further, opening a soft drink parlor and restaurant, reviving the concept of the beer garden for the community.
Muskegon Brewing Company produced a range of beer brands, including Muskegon Lager, Muskegon Best, Special Brew, Export Weiner, Export Lager, and Hof Brau, catering to diverse tastes.

Adding to its offerings, the brewery introduced a beer garden in 1880, becoming a cherished social hub for locals. However, tragedy struck on May 25, 1933, when the brewery and offices were engulfed in flames, resulting in a total loss.
Today, remnants of the brewery can still be found on the Coles property, serving as a poignant reminder of its historical significance. Muskegon Brewing Company is being reestablished to honor this storied past and celebrate the industries that shaped the community.

A significant aspect of this revival is the partnership with Pigeon Hill, a cornerstone of Muskegon’s modern brewing scene. This collaboration ensures that only the finest beers are crafted under the MBC label, preserving the tradition of excellence while offering guests a complete dining experience.

Together, Muskegon Brewing Company and Pigeon Hill continue to write the next chapter of Muskegon’s brewing legacy, bridging the past and the present in a toast to the community’s enduring spirit.
